Project No- 20-M04AAU.

Summary

Ethiopia is a country in the horn of Africa with a population of around 110 million, which makes it the second-largest country in Africa subcontinent in terms of the population. Ethiopia has an interconnected power system with the total installed capacity around 90% is generated by hydroelectric power plants, while 7.65%, 0.17%  and 2.34% are produced by wind, geothermal, and diesel power plants, respectively.

REMCE aims at solving the challenges of large-scale deployment of renewable energy-based minigrids, while boosting the electricity access in the rural communities of Ethiopia. To this end, REMCE will collect and analyze the relevant data and information to examine and select the most suitable locations in Ethiopia and the best minigrid configurations. The locations will be selected from the regional state called Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region (SNNPR) since it has many remote areas not connected to the grid, has a number of micro-hydropower plants, and presents good solar and wind power potential.
