Course schedule

Topic and lecturer
Day 1: From Synchronous Generators to Grid-Forming Converters
  • Grid-synchronization and fundamental concepts of grid-forming converters
  • Overview of virtual synchronous generators
  • Synchronous power control: principles and industry practices
Day 2: Grid forming specifications, grid codes and small-signal stability issues
  • Grid code requirements and technical specifications
  • Fundamentals small-signal stability theories in power electronics converters
  • Small-signal modeling and synchronization stability of grid-forming converters
Day 3: Grid-forming controls for large disturbance ride-through
  • Functional requirements of grid-forming converters under large disturbances
  • Transient stability analysis of grid-forming converters without current limitation triggered
  • - Current-limiting control of grid-forming converters and its transient stability analysis

Converter-based systems dominate modern grids due to increasing renewables, where grid-forming controlled converters play a key role in maintaining power system stability. This course addresses crucial grid-forming converter principles, including grid codes, control design, stability, resonance damping, and fault management for power professionals and researchers.

Important information concerning PhD courses

The Doctoral School has decided to introduce a no-show fee of DKK 3000 for each course where the student does not show up. Cancellations are accepted no later than 2 weeks before the start of the course. Registered illness is of course an acceptable reason for not showing up on those days. Furthermore, all courses open for registration approximately four months before start.

For inquiries regarding registration, cancellation or waiting list, please contact AAU Energy's administration at hr@energy.aau.dk
