AAU Energy, as part of the Horizon Europe project CIRCULAIR

Circulair Summer School

The summer school is organized in the framework of the Horizon Europe project CIRCULAIR, of which Aalborg University is a partner. The course aims at presenting the different technologies which form the scope of the CIRCULAIR project, where hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is utilized to build a carbon-negative concept to convert agricultural residues into sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) and other energy products.

The summer school has a wide focus and encompasses several aspects, from presenting the fundamentals of HTL to the newest advancements in the upgrading of the produced biocrude into sustainable aviation fuels, also giving a clear view of the current market and normative requirements for SAFs. A qualifying innovative aspect of the CIRCULAIR concept is its attention to carbon-negativity, therefore expert presentations will be held on how to effectively treat HTL side streams to achieve this aim. These will include the use of solid char products in soil and the capture of gaseous CO2 emissions for methanol synthesis, therefore representing a bridging point between HTL and Power-to-X. The offer is enriched by the presence of industrial partners, who can give their view on the commercialization of each technology, now approaching commercialization. Finally, technical visits will be given at both Aalborg University and Aarhus University HTL facilities, which are considered among the worldwide leading institutions in this field.

CIRCULAIR is funded by the European Union under GA No. 101083944.
