Mobile power unit with renewable energy for events

Published online: 27.09.2023

Events like open air concerts often use diesel generators to supply electric power. That’s noisy and not sustainable. Researchers at AAU Energy, amongst them Associate Professor Simon Sahlin, has cooperated with Aalborg Kommune, Energy Cluster Denmark, Green Hub Denmark and companies Sound & Light, and GEST (Green Energy Supply Technology, which is a AAU Energy spin-off company) to create a new mobile battery solution with solar power. It premieres on Sunday October 1st at a concert with Dorte Gerlach in Skørbæk.

The solution is very mobile. It is a trailer with several solar panels, which can generate 4,5 kw of power and a battery equivalent of a small electric car.  With a weight of just 1.300 kg, it can be moved by an ordinary car, and can be used for several kinds of events.

Simon Sahlin says the concept is designed for events and their need for power but can be extended to other arrangements or situations in need of power supply. It could be emergencies like fires, floods, and other natural disasters, where power is important for communication, surveillance, and aid.

According to Simon Sahlin the solution is not just the battery and solar panels, but includes software, modelling of the power supply and analyses. The concept is easily scalable in capacity, effect, and number of solar cells.

AAU Energy wants to expand the concept with several more environmentally friendly fuels as a supplement to solar panels. It could be fuel cells based on hydrogen or methanol, or traditional generators using green biofuels.

In a press release from Aalborg Kommune, Mayor Lasse Frimand Jensen says he is glad there is created new green technological solutions in Aalborg. To fulfil the ambition to become the green capital city of Europe, takes not just words but actions. He emphasizes that it is possible due to the great educational institutions and their collaboration with private companies and the authorities.
