A thousand minds concentrate on power electronics in Aalborg

Published online: 05.09.2023

It has taken a year to arrange. More than a thousand participants comes from plus thirty countries and will attend over one hundred oral presentations and beyond three hundred posters. Overall 450+ papers have been processed by scientists and industry engineers in the period preceding the conference, just to illustrate the huge amount of knowledge gathered. Hence, the congress center AKKC will be bustling all week with people discussing power electronics, energy, and the green transition.

A thousand minds concentrate on power electronics in Aalborg

It has taken a year to arrange. More than a thousand participants comes from plus thirty countries and will attend over one hundred oral presentations and beyond three hundred posters. Overall 450+ papers have been processed by scientists and industry engineers in the period preceding the conference, just to illustrate the huge amount of knowledge gathered. Hence, the congress center AKKC will be bustling all week with people discussing power electronics, energy, and the green transition.

The EPE’23 ECCE conference (European Power Electronics and Drives Association) has come to Aalborg because of a tremendous effort by Professor Francesco Iannuzzo and several of his fellow researchers and students at AAU Energy. All of which has worked as volunteers. 18 Aalborg University researchers, amongst them people like Frede Blaabjerg and Stig Munk-Nielsen, as well as industry people with Philip C Kjaer from Vestas as one of the co-chairpersons, has helped during the last year, where Francesco Iannuzzo has been chairperson of the conference. Fifty-five people from AAU Energy are volunteers during the conference, and they, and several more, are in AKKC this week.

“Without them it would never have been possible” says Francesco, who applied for taking on the huge challenge of being the head organizer as long ago as during the pandemic, when no one knew what would be possible for a conference in 2023.

There are six focus topics at EPE’23:

  • Renewable Energy Systems and Power-to-X
  • Energy Islands
  • Energy Storage Technologies
  • Electric Vehicles
  • Emerging Power Electronic Devices and Semiconductors
  • Reliability and Artificial Intelligence in Power Electronics.

Francesco Iannuzzo emphasizes Aalborg as a natural place for the conference, due to the top-tier research in the field at Aalborg University and because of the historical network of industry in the field of power electronics for renewable energy, power grids and industrial applications. He sees a huge value in the extensive work with papers and presentations processed for the conference, and the networking between researchers from universities and people from the industry. This interaction is extremely important for developing knowledge in the field of power electronics – without which we would not be able to have electricity in our homes and use electric motors for cars, pumps, bikes, washing machines and countless other applications.
