It is with great pleasure that AAU Energy will lead the EFFORT (ElectriFication and Flexibility provision from Green PORT North) project for the next three years, which through intelligent use of data will produce tools, guidelines and roadmaps for the future expansion of the port in Hirtshals which will be completed in 2027.

Data-driven energy flexibility and sector coupling are the keywords, and the purpose is to create a basis for the development of a symbiotic and local energy community at Port of Hirtshals

The purpose is to ensure a successful development of Hirtshals Port through intelligent use of data to control the overall energy system. Data will be measured and stored in a local data hub. The idea is to optimize the energy system at the port using coupling between the electricity, heat and water sector, and at the same time control the system in a flexible manner not overloading the local electricity grid.

As the project coordinator I really look forward to the cooperation with the partners to really see how also industry in local areas can contribute to the provision of flexibility, so far my experience has mainly be on flexibility from private households.

The project has a total budget of DKK 13.6 million DKK, of which ELFORSK has granted DKK 8 million DKK. This is the largest amount so far awarded to a single project under ELFORSK. With this, the foundation has been laid making Hirtshals Europe's greenest port.

The ELFORSK pool is administered by the Danish Energy Agency and Green Power Denmark and aims to promote research and development of solutions within efficient energy use and flexible electricity and energy consumption.

We have a very nice spectrum of partners from all different angles in the supply chain, so it will be very interesting to coordinate their different perspectives to find realistic and applicable solutions for the port of Hirtshals
