A new pioneer center for the development of materials and technologies for Power-to-X will accelerate the green transition. The Pioneer Center for Accelerating P2X Materials Discovery—in daily parlance CAPeX—will, among other activities, develop more efficient and robust materials to convert water and CO2 into sustainable fuels and chemicals using green power from wind turbines and solar cells.
The pioneer center has been made possible with a total grant of DKK 300 million from the Danish Ministry of Higher Education and Science, the Danish National Research Foundation, the Carlsberg Foundation, the Lundbeck Foundation, the Novo Nordisk Foundation, and VILLUM FONDEN.
The most efficient materials used today to produce hydrogen by means of electrolysis are based on rare minerals and earth elements. One of the most important challenges for CAPeX is to develop new sustainable catalysts for electrolysis that are scalable and can be used globally, and to provide sustainable solutions for, for example, heavy transport and air traffic which can be made so efficient and inexpensive that they meet the UN climate goals.
CAPeX brings together leading experts and competences from the Danish universities and three international consortia for the development of a new powerful materials acceleration platform (MAP) for the rapid development of materials. A MAP combines computer simulations, experiments, and synthesis robots in a closed loop, including by means of artificial intelligence. The platform is expected to increase the pace of development of new materials five to ten times.
The center is run in a partnership between DTU and Aalborg University (AAU), and is located in a new interdisciplinary ‘Climate Challenge Laboratory’ at DTU. Here, researchers from DTU, AAU, the University of Copenhagen, Aarhus University, and the University of Southern Denmark will create a ground-breaking interdisciplinary environment for Power-to-X technology in collaboration with international partners from Stanford University, Utrecht University, and University of Toronto.
Professor Frede Blaabjerg from Aalborg University is co-lead in CAPeX, and heads the development of a so-called digital twin, where researchers in a virtual universe can design, test, and analyse new materials, cells, and systems before they are manufactured. The objective is to make it possible to predict how materials and systems change their properties and behaviour from the atomic level right up to optimization of an energy island.
One of the first tasks in CAPeX will be to develop new materials for the production of liquid green fuels, so that the technology becomes much more efficient and sustainable than today, and can be spread globally. This is followed by the construction of a comprehensive education programme for the next generation of researchers and Power-to-X experts, who will have access to more than 100 PhD and postdoctoral positions during the life of the center, including through three fellowship programmes with exchange stays at Stanford University, University of Toronto, and Utrecht University.
Over the 13-year project period, CAPeX will expand the platform for research into the composition of new materials and new Power-to-X technologies that use green power from wind turbines to produce sustainable chemicals, plastics, medicines, and even proteins for foods.
The pioneer center CAPeX will develop and implement a powerful platform for rapid development of materials and a data infrastructure in which new materials for, for example, catalysts are discovered and designed directly for their actual operating conditions.
The establishment of the pioneer centers is a national initiative managed by the Danish National Research Foundation to which the Ministry of Higher Education and Science has taken the initiative. The establishment takes place in close collaboration and co-funding between the Danish National Research Foundation, the Carlsberg Foundation, the Lundbeck Foundation, the Novo Nordisk Foundation, VILLUM FONDEN, and universities in Denmark.
