Microgrids (MGs) are the key component of future smart-grid. MGs are controllable intelligent systems, which can effectively integrate the distributed energy sources (DERs) which include conventional and renewable energy sources (RESs), storage devices and loads. They operate autonomously or in parallel with the utility grid. MGs offering several advantages, increasing the efficiency of the distribution network, enhancing reliability, reducing system losses and environmentally friendly. The integration of DERs, RESs and loads through power electronics interfaces and the transition between grid-connected and islanded MGs increases the complexity of the modern distribution system.
The protection of AC MGs is challenging due to bidirectional power flow, topology changes, and inverter interface distributed generators (IIDGs) which are offers low level of short circuit current. The main objective of a protection system of MGs is to detect, locate and isolate the faults with appropriate sensitivity and selectivity in a coordinated way for islanded and grid-connected operations. The aim of this Ph.D research project is propose and develop a protection system for an islanded AC MGs and AC MGs cluster for fast fault detection by utilization of intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) and IEC-61850 standards following a coordinated way through the centralized intelligent management system. The expected outcomes of this research work are the design and development of intelligent, reliable and versatile protection systems for islanded AC MGs and MGs cluster system, which based on IEDs and artificial intelligence techniques, which will, offers a robust and flexible MGs.
