In connection with the increasing integration of intermittent renewable sources such as wind and solar farms, and distributed energy resources such energy storages, heat pumps and electric vehicles etc. into the power grid, the existing traditional fossil-fuel based energy system (which are generally used to carry electric power from a few central generators to a large amount of consumers) faces unprecedented challenges and needs radical changes.
This Ph.D. project is focused on the role of smart buildings, equipped with multi-energy system (which consume, produce, store and supply electric energy back to the grid) in providing energy efficiency, in transforming existing energy system towards a more decentralized, renewable-based and interconnected intelligent network, and in supporting active electric distribution grid operation and management through the advancement of technology of two-way flows of electricity and information.
The project investigates and attempts to propose solutions to the following areas:
• Role of Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS) to improve the planning and forecasting process of flexible loads and production units within smart buildings, for enabling demand response thereby facilitating grid support to the electrical grid management and operation.
• Utilisation of energy storage systems within smart building and under the control of BEMS to intelligently accumulate energy and supply it back to the electrical grid when it is necessary, and thereby supporting the network via two-ways/bi-directional power flows during the hours of maximum peak consumption and congestions.
• Providing support to the electrical grid operation by two-way real-time data communication between BEMS of smart buildings and electrical grid control centre.
• Level of system automation of electrical loads and power generation and smart energy metering interfaced with BEMS of smart buildings, to promote energy efficiency, reduction of electrical energy price for consumers and stimulation of reducing global energy consumption.
