Long term durability of PBI based fuel cells is a critical concern. Lifetimes of up to 18,000 hours at 150-160 °C have been demonstrated with voltage decay rates of <5.0 μVh−1, however, under continuous steady-state operations with a mild constant current of typically 0.2 A/cm2. Increase in the current density, temperature and reactant stoichiometry accelerates the degradation. In addition thermal and load cycling as well as shutdown-startup significantly deteriorate the durability. This talk focuses on material degradation issues including carbon corrosion, platinum sintering and polymer oxidation, all being aggravated at elevated temperatures. The presence of phosphoric acid and its retention are another key issue, especially under operation with methanol reformate. Further efforts are outlined to the future work.
