### Description:

Optimal decision-making is a must in energy system planning and operation as the non-optimal decisions may lead to high economic losses and/or technical issues. The course on “Advanced Optimization Techniques for Energy Systems Planning and Operation” is aimed at providing an in-depth introduction to energy system optimization methods. The course will contain a wide range of the basic methods to advanced techniques with hand on examples related to energy systems. The participants will learn how to implement the methods using optimization packages such as GAMS and MATLAB.

### Syllabus: The course will mainly cover the following subjects

#### Day 1 (8:30-16:30- both Lecturers)

1.1 Introduction to optimization

1.2 Linear programming (geometric methods, simplex algorithm, and sensitivity) and duality theories (dual problem, weak duality theory, and strong duality theory)

1.3 Decomposition Techniques for LP ( Dantzig Wolfe & Benders)

#### Day 2 (8:30-16:30- both Lecturers)

2.1. Mixed integer linear programming

2.2. Nonlinear programming (KKT conditions, convexity, duality)

2.3. Application of Metaheuristic Algorithms

#### Day 3 (8:30-16:30- both Lecturers)

3.1. Multi-objective optimization

3.2. Bi-level programming

3.3. Stochastic Optimization

3.4. Risk Modelling and Management

### Prerequisites:

Basic knowledge in linear algebra and programming.

### Form of evaluation:

The participants will be evaluated by exercises in a daily basis (both individually and in groups) and a mini-project on the optimization of energy systems at the end of the course.
